Work experience: When does it become an asset or an overhead?
A decade of experience does not automatically mean a decade of increasing value. Your career becomes an asset when your experience helps you solve bigger problems, make better decisions and deliver outcomes that employers are willing to pay more for. A useful test: if your salary has doubled, what does your employer get from you today that it cannot get from someone earning half as much?

10 years of experience or one year repeated 10 times?
Two employees may both have 10 years of experience, but their market value can be very different. One may have spent those years taking on progressively tougher work, making bigger decisions and handling greater consequences. Another may have spent most of that time repeating the same routine. Ask yourself: What can you solve today that you could not solve two or five years ago?

Shift from managing activities to owning outcomes
“Managing a team” describes an activity. “Reduced project delays by 30%” demonstrates an outcome. Your value becomes easier to measure when you own outcomes related to revenue, retention, delivery, costs, risk, quality or productivity.

You do not need to wait for a promotion. Ask your manager for a measurable problem you can own end-to-end over the next 90 days and track what changes.

Build scarcity, not just seniority
Seniority alone can make you expensive; scarce skills can make you valuable. Scarcity can come from technical expertise, domain knowledge, commercial relationships, regulatory understanding or a combination of skills. The takeaway: build expertise that employers find difficult to replace, and prove it through live work rather than simply collecting courses.

Become a player-coach, not just a manager
The ability to solve difficult problems yourself while developing a team can make your experience more valuable. TCS announced 12,200 job cuts in 2025, mainly affecting middle and senior management, citing a skills mismatch. This is not universal across sectors. But it brings up a crucial career question: If your team disappeared tomorrow, what value could you still offer on your own?

Your mid-career dashboard: 5 things to track
1. Track external market value: Speak to recruiters and industry contacts twice a year to assess demand for your skills.
2. Check skill freshness: Focus on skills and tools you actually used in the past year.
3. Measure problem size: Are you handling bigger risks, decisions and undefined problems?
4. Count outside options: Track professional relationships, recruiters, potential employers and portable skills.
5. Build a rejection fund: Maintain enough savings to cover essential expenses during a job search, giving you the flexibility to reject the wrong offer.

Your salary is income; employability is the bigger asset
Your CTC tells you what you are worth to your current employer today. Your ability to reproduce and grow that income elsewhere determines your long-term earning power. Every six months, ask yourself:
● Are my skills becoming scarcer?
● Am I solving bigger problems?
● Is my value visible outside my organisation?
● Could I find another role if I lost my job?
● Could my finances support me during a job search?
