The tax rule that lets professionals pay on half their income, legally
Section 44ADA is one of the most underused provisions in the Income Tax Act. If you are a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or freelancer, this could save you lakhs every year.

What it is: The government assumes you spent 50%. You keep the rest.
Under Section 44ADA, the tax department presumes that 50% of your gross professional receipts went toward expenses, regardless of what you actually spent. You pay income tax only on the remaining 50%.
No books of accounts. No CA audit. Just file ITR-4 and you're done.

When not to use it: If your actual expenses cross 50%, this scheme will cost you more
Section 44ADA only saves tax when your real expense ratio is below 50%. If you spend more than half your receipts running your practice, on staff, equipment, rent, declaring 50% as income means overpaying.
Also note: if a partnership firm opts in, no separate deduction for partner salary or interest is allowed.

One switch on your ITR-4, potentially lakhs saved every year
Unlike Section 44AD for businesses, there is no five-year lock-in with 44ADA — you can opt in or out every single year based on what works best. Pay 100% of your advance tax by March 15, file ITR-4, and you are compliant.
Always consult a chartered accountant before making a switch — what saves tax on paper must work for your specific numbers.
