Who is Ryan Weathers? Yankees reportedly acquire Marlins pitcher for 4 prospects
The New York Yankees have secured pitcher Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins. This move strengthens their pitching staff which has been affected by injuries. Weathers joins the Yankees as they prepare for the season without key starters. The Mar...

The San Diego Padres selected Weathers with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft, and he worked his way into the rotation in under three years. After two and a half seasons with the Padres, he was traded to the Miami Marlins at the 2023 trade deadline.
The Yankees have also re-signed Ryan Yarbrough for depth and are close to bringing back Paul Blackburn. Weathers has shown promise but has struggled to stay healthy. Last season, he went 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in eight starts during his second straight injury-shortened campaign, reported AP. He opened his year on May 14 after recovering from a strained left flexor, then missed most of the summer due to a left lat strain, not pitching between June 7 and September 11. In 2024, he made 16 starts and posted a 5-6 record with a 3.63 ERA before being sidelined by a strained left index finger.
Despite the interruptions, the Yankees believe Weathers’ left-handed arm and upside make him a valuable addition. He is also a familiar name in New York, as he is the son of former Yankees reliever David Weathers. Eligible for arbitration for the first time, as reported by AP, Weathers agreed last week to a one-year, $1.35 million contract. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2028 World Series.
