Rex Culpepper, a former quarterback for the Syracuse Orange football and the son of former NFL player Brad Culpepper, has died at the age of 28 following a dirt bike accident in Georgia. The university confirmed his death on Monday, while his fiancée, Savanna Morgan, also shared the heartbreaking news through an emotional post on Instagram. Culpepper played college football at Syracuse University from 2016 through 2020. During his time with the Orange, he appeared in 16 games and threw for 1,546 yards, recording 11 touchdown passes along with 11 interceptions. Throughout his college career, he shifted between the quarterback and tight end positions before ultimately returning to quarterback.

Beyond football, Culpepper was admired for his courage and perseverance. In March 2018, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer but refused to let the illness end his career. Even while undergoing chemotherapy, he participated in Syracuse’s spring game and entered on the final drive, leading his team to a touchdown. His determination and courage earned him the inaugural Jim DaRin Courage Award, and he later returned to compete during his sophomore season.

"Our Orange family mourns the loss of Rex Culpepper, who passed away this weekend at the age of 28. Rex lived his life with endless passion, having overcome cancer at the age of 20 while playing for the Orange. Appearing in 30 games, Rex played football as fierce as he lived life. Our hearts are with the Culpepper family & all those who loved him," Syracuse paid a touching tribute to Rex in a statement.

According to Yahoo, Culpepper starred at Plant High School in Florida before joining Syracuse. As a quarterback, he completed 152 of 248 passes for 2,145 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also led Plant to the 2014 Florida Class 8A regional semifinals and earned multiple honors, including second-team all-county and third-team all-state recognition. Culpepper served as a two-time team captain but missed his senior season due to injury.
