‘Saban’: ESPN’s new docuseries
ESPN, in partnership with acclaimed production studio Words + Pictures, has announced the development of a new multi-part documentary series titled Saban, chronicling the life, career, and enduring legacy of Nick Saban, widely regarded as college football’s most successful coach of the modern era. The announcement was made via ESPN’s official press channels on January 20, 2026, and marks one of the most in-depth cinematic explorations of an individual football coaching career to date.

Saban is set to be a six-episode ESPN Original series that will explore the remarkable journey of Nick Saban from his early life and coaching beginnings through his ascent to becoming a cultural icon in American sports.

The series is produced by Words + Pictures, known for its documentary craftsmanship, with oversight by producers Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen, and Alexa Conway, and direction by Russell Dinallo. Gabe Honig serves as co-executive producer and showrunner.

According to ESPN’s press release, the series promises exclusive access to never-before-seen footage, including locker room interactions, practice fields, and behind-the-scenes moments from Saban’s tenure at major football programs.

Nick Saban and his coaching greatness

Nick Saban is widely regarded as the greatest college football coach of all time, known for building a modern dynasty with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Saban’s coaching résumé is unparalleled in modern college football history and forms the backbone of the docuseries narrative. Across a 17-season run at the University of Alabama, Saban led the Crimson Tide to six national championships, transforming the program into a perennial powerhouse.

Including his earlier success with the LSU Tigers, where he won his first national title in 2003, Saban’s career totals seven championships, the most of any coach in the modern era of the sport.

The docuseries will not only revisit these pinnacle achievements but will also reflect on his philosophy of “The Process”, a meticulous approach to preparation and performance that underpinned his teams’ consistency and competitive excellence. It promises to unpack how this framework became a cultural touchstone within football and beyond.

The show’s narrative arc will cover Saban’s early coaching stops, including Michigan State University, the Miami Dolphins in the NFL, and the University of Louisiana State (LSU), before culminating in his defining years in Tuscaloosa.

In a statement distributed with the announcement, Saban commented, “With my coaching days behind me, Ms. Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story. The team at Words + Pictures has encouraged me to really look back not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way – and not just reflect on what happened but consider the process which made it happen. I interacted with a lot of players and coaches along the way and I’m happy to see that so many of them have contributed to this docuseries. There’s a lot to tell, and I’m excited to share it all.”

Release details and availability

While the production is confirmed to be underway, ESPN has not yet announced a premiere date or detailed rollout plan for Saban. Additional information on episode scheduling and distribution will be shared by the network at a future date.
