The gold-medal game was tightly contested from the start. Canada drew first blood in the second period when Kristin O'Neill scored a backhand goal on a shorthanded play, ending the Americans' 351-minute shutout streak in the tournament. With Canada appearing poised for victory, Hilary Knight struck from centre ice late in regulation to tie the game, sending it into overtime. Knight's goal also set a new Olympic record for US women, bringing her career total to 15 goals at the Games.
Keller's overtime winner ensured the Americans avoided the full 20-minute overtime period, her precise skill earning her immediate celebration from teammates while US head coach John Wroblewski openly wept with joy. Desbiens acknowledged the brilliance of the play, admitting the puck had 'squeaked in' and predicting the moment would stay with her for a long time.
WHO IS MEGAN KELLER?
Megan Keller, a native of Michigan, made her mark early in hockey, earning a silver medal at the 2014 IIHF U18 World Championship before committing to Boston College. From her first season in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, she quickly became a cornerstone of the Eagles’ program. By the end of her NCAA career (2014-2019), Keller had set records for a defenseman with 45 goals, 113 assists, and 158 points.

Her leadership helped Boston College reach three Frozen Four appearances and finish as national runner-up in 2016. Individually, she earned the Cammi Granato Award twice as Hockey East’s top player, was named an AHCA-CCM Division I All-American in 2016-17, and finished as a top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award in her senior year after two top-10 finalist nods.
Keller also contributed to Team USA’s Olympic success, taking a leave in 2017-18 from Boston College to win gold. She added four assists in the Team USA's runner-up campaign in the 2022 Winter Games. In 2026, she led the US with three goals and nine points, including a goal and an assist in the gold medal match.
