After a run of three consecutive defeats and six losses in their last seven outings, the Vegas Golden Knights moved to make a coaching change, with general manager Kelly McCrimmon confirming the decision as the team clings to third place in the Pacific Division and remains in playoff contention despite the slide.
The appointment marks the 24th NHL head coaching season for John Tortorella.
McCrimmon said, "with John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face.”
Who is John Tortorella
John Tortorella is a veteran NHL bench boss with more than two decades of coaching experience, widely known for his demanding, defence-first philosophy and intense leadership style. A Stanley Cup-winning coach, he led the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first Stanley Cup title in 2004 and has since held head coaching roles with the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers.
Internationally, Tortorella has maintained a longstanding association with USA Hockey, serving as head coach at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and in multiple assistant roles at major tournaments.
He was a part of the US coaching staff for the 2026 Winter Olympics. His coaching career began in the minor leagues, including a Calder Cup-winning stint with the Rochester Americans, following a brief playing career at the University of Maine and in lower-tier professional leagues.
A post-Olympic slump has seen the Vegas Golden Knights go 5-10-2 while being outscored 3.2 to 2.4 per game, leaving them on track for their first losing season.
Focus now turns to John Tortorella and his ability to maximise a roster the Vegas Golden Knights still view as championship-calibre, bolstered by five Olympic gold medal participants.
