Italy had already complicated the group standings by defeating the United States 8-6 the previous night. That loss temporarily left the Americans waiting and watching, hoping other results would fall in their favor. Once Italy built a comfortable lead against Mexico, however, the situation became clear and the US could breathe easier knowing its tournament run would continue.
Mexico, which finished the group stage 2-2, was eliminated from the competition despite an earlier loss to the United States. The defeat also ended Mexico’s hopes of qualifying for the baseball tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The United States now remains in Houston for the next stage of the tournament. They will face the Canada on Friday night in a quarterfinal matchup. Canada reached this stage for the first time in its tournament history.
Earlier in group play, the United States recorded victories over Great Britain and Brazil.
With the knockout rounds beginning, the stakes rise sharply. The Americans now know that if they want to continue their title pursuit, every game from here on out must end in a win to keep their championship hopes alive.
