UFC White House event delayed due to lightning and severe weather threat

Severe weather forced a temporary halt to the UFC event scheduled for Sunday evening, delaying the start of the seven-fight card that was originally set to begin at 8 PM ET. Organizers paused proceedings as thunderstorms approached the area, bringing concerns over lightning, strong winds, and rain. Broadcast officials explained that any lightning detected within a six-mile radius would automatically trigger a 30-minute shelter-in-place period, with the countdown restarting if additional strikes occurred nearby.

While rain and gusty conditions posed challenges, lightning remained the primary safety concern. Forecasters indicated that conditions were expected to improve later in the evening, potentially allowing the event to proceed after 9 PM ET. The athletes competing on the card had been reportedly informed in advance that weather-related interruptions were a possibility. The main event features a lightweight championship clash between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje.

UFC leadership remained committed to staging the event despite the delay. The card is part of broader celebrations taking place across the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding and also marks President Donald Trump's 80th birthday. The date also coincides with Flag Day, with numerous commemorative activities planned nationwide, including events in Washington, DC.


“This event is a one of one event, incredible event. I love it,” said UFC chief Dana White, a close friend of the president, during a Friday night hype session at the Lincoln Memorial where pairs of fighters shoved and scuffled for the cameras under the stoic gaze of Honest Abe’s marble likeness.

The UFC has reportedly invested around $60 million into the weekend's celebrations, while the Republican president has promoted the occasion as 'the greatest show on earth'.
