According to Steam’s support pages, as quoted by Red94, planned maintenance usually lasts less than an hour. These scheduled updates take place every Tuesday, either early in the morning or late afternoon Pacific Time, and are designed to avoid peak gaming hours while keeping the platform stable and secure. Unplanned outages, however, can last longer depending on the issue. Sunday’s disruption was unexpected and not part of regular maintenance, catching many users by surprise. The outage sparked widespread frustration across the gaming community, but Valve moved quickly to resolve the problem. The fast recovery highlighted Valve’s effort to keep the world’s largest PC gaming platform reliable for its millions of users.
This marked the third major Steam outage in past week. The platform experienced two significant disruptions within a 24-hour span on December 15 and 16, when tens of thousands of users reported trouble accessing Steam, according to Downdetector, Red94 reported. During the Steam outage on December 15, many users reported seeing the E502 L3 error, which is a server-side 'Bad Gateway' issue caused by problems within Steam’s own systems. The error happens when Steam clients are unable to properly communicate with the platform’s servers, even though users’ internet connections are working normally.
Steam suffered a second major outage on Tuesday, December 16, according to reports from Downdetector. More than 41,000 users flagged problems, most of them related to server connection failures. The disruption affected multiple regions and closely resembled the outage from the previous day, leaving many users unable to connect to Steam servers.
