In a major relief, former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore avoided jail time and was instead sentenced to 18 months of probation in a high-profile stalking case involving ex-mistress Paige Shiver, marking a dramatic fall from grace. Moore was dismissed on December 10 after serving two seasons as Wolverines head coach, taking over following Jim Harbaugh’s move to the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. The decision marked a shocking exit from one of college football’s most prestigious programs. Moore had pleaded down last month to two misdemeanor charges after appearing at the home of former assistant Shiver, 32, where he allegedly threatened self-harm following their breakup. According to the New York Post, the 40-year-old former Wolverines head coach, a married father of three, arrived in court with his wife, Kelli Moore, before receiving probation sentence from Judge Cedric Simpson in Washtenaw County Court.

Moore briefly addressed the court, expressing gratitude to his wife for 'standing by me' before sentencing. Judge Simpson said the offense did not merit jail time but cautioned that any violation of probation would lead to immediate imprisonment. He also stressed that the ruling should not downplay the ordeal experienced by Shiver.


"You had no right to do what you did," Simpson told Moore as quoted by New York Post. "I know that [Shiver] was placed in fear. It was a traumatic experience that day for you. It was certainly a traumatic experience for her.

"You had no right to spread your pain to her," the judge further said.

"I don’t know where your wife, Kelli, finds her strength," Simpson added as the spouse looked on from the courtroom gallery. "You, sir, took her for granted."

Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski did not seek jail time, instead leaving the decision to the court’s discretion, reported the outlet. Meanwhile, Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, told the court that her client had accepted responsibility, pursued mental health treatment, and is now focused on rebuilding his life with his family.

Moore initially faced up to five years in prison on serious charges like home invasion and stalking but later pleaded down to lesser offenses, including misuse of a telecommunications device and trespassing. Prosecutors said he repeatedly contacted Shiver before going to her home, where he allegedly threatened self-harm using butter knives and scissors. Moore did not injure himself and was later taken into custody without incident in a parking lot away from the woman’s apartment.

"I’m going to kill myself. I’m going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You’ve ruined my life," prosecutors claimed Moore told Shiver, as quoted by the media outlet, at the time.

The incident unfolded after Shiver disclosed the affair to the school and chose to end her relationship with the coach.

Judge Simpson said prosecutors were justified in permitting Moore to plead to lesser charges, as reported by the New York Post, noting the investigation did not fully support the more serious stalking allegations, particularly as Shiver had continued engaging in multiple phone conversations with him after claiming she had cut off contact.

Simpson also issued a stern warning to Moore, ordering him not to contact Shiver in any form or mention her online, asking, “Am I clear on that?”

“Yes, sir,” Moore replied.
