The 6-foot-6 guard was selected 12th overall in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He appeared in just one preseason game before undergoing surgery and chemotherapy following a cancer diagnosis. The Serbian guard had already missed the previous season due to a knee injury suffered before the draft.
After a procedure in October and months of treatment, Topic worked his way back into game shape. He entered Thursday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks late in the first quarter and was met with a loud ovation. He scored two points on a jumper, adding one rebound and one assist in a 110-93 loss.
The Serbia native made his G League debut for the Oklahoma City Blue on Tuesday against the Sioux Falls Skyforce, recording seven points and seven assists in 16 minutes of action.
"We're all just collectively thrilled that he's back playing basketball," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault told reporters as quoted by Bleacher Report. "I know he's missed it a great deal, and this is just so good for him mentally to get his feet back underneath him."
