Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Newark this weekend with UFC 328 at the Prudential Center, continuing the city’s long-standing connection with the promotion. The event marks the 11th UFC card held in Newark and features two championship fights that have generated major excitement among MMA fans. The main event sees unbeaten middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev make the first defense of his title against former champion Sean Strickland.

Chimaev captured the belt last year with a dominant victory over Dricus Du Plessis, overwhelming him with relentless wrestling and ground control. Although Chimaev’s recent fights have been more competitive than his explosive early UFC appearances, he remains undefeated and continues to prove himself against elite opponents.



Strickland earned this title opportunity after an impressive win over Anthony Hernandez earlier this year. The former champion showed a more aggressive approach in that fight and secured a stoppage victory. After losing two recent championship bouts, Strickland now has another chance to reclaim the middleweight crown.

The co-main event features flyweight champion Joshua Van defending his title against Japanese contender Tatsuro Taira. Originally scheduled for UFC 327, the bout was moved to Newark, adding even more depth to the card.


Van won the title from Alexandre Pantoja last December and enters the fight riding a six-fight winning streak. Meanwhile, Taira arrives with momentum of his own after defeating former champion Brandon Moreno in a dominant performance.

With both fighters known for exciting finishes, the matchup could steal the show at UFC 328.
