The San Antonio Spurs have reportedly waived Jeremy Sochan on Wednesday, giving the 22-year-old forward an opportunity to pursue a fresh start in free agency. Once a regular starter, Sochan fell out of coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation and logged just eight total minutes across the Spurs’ final 12 games.

Despite San Antonio’s unsuccessful attempts to trade him before the February 5 deadline, ESPN reports that Sochan is still expected to draw interest from multiple teams. This season, he averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 12.8 minutes per game over 28 appearances off the bench. Notably, he scored in double figures in each of his first three NBA seasons.

According to Sports Illustrated, Sochan’s all-around game makes him an ideal do-it-all forward for the Cavaliers. At 6-foot-8, he has the versatility to play either forward spot and provide help across the board. Whether the team needs rebounding, playmaking, or scoring, Sochan possesses the well-rounded skill set to step in and fill whatever role is asked of him.

Ahead of Tuesday’s 136-108 road win over the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson commended Sochan for his professionalism throughout the situation.

"He's been asked to be the role of defensive disruptor and to be a versatile piece offensively for us, and nothing has changed in that regard," Johnson said as quoted by Reuters. "I know Jeremy is wanting to play more, like many of the people that aren't playing as much, and I'm glad that he wants that. That's the competitive mindset that you have to have to be successful in this league."

Sochan, who was selected No. 9 overall out of Baylor in the 2022 NBA Draft, earned a spot on the 2022-23 All-Rookie Team. During the 2023-24 season, former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich even experimented with him at point guard while Victor Wembanyama navigated his rookie year, reported Reuters.

San Antonio won just 22 games in each of Sochan’s first two seasons, but the team has since taken a major step forward and entered Wednesday’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors sitting second in the Western Conference standings.
