Italy suffered another major setback as they failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a dramatic penalty shootout in their playoff final on Tuesday. The match ended in a tense 1-1 draw before Bosnia held their nerve to secure a historic qualification. Italy’s absence marks a shocking fall for one of football’s traditional powerhouses, raising fresh questions about the team’s future. Meanwhile, Bosnia celebrated a memorable achievement as they booked their place on the global stage with a composed and resilient performance under pressure.

Four-time champions Italy's last appearance came in 2014 - the same year Bosnia and Herzegovina team made their only previous World Cup showing. Since lifting the trophy in 2006, Italy have managed just one win at the finals. Bosnia will now compete in Group B alongside co-hosts Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland. Meanwhile, Italy are left facing tough questions after yet another disappointing campaign.

Bosnia, who had endured their own playoff disappointments - missing the 2010 World Cup and the last four European Championships - turned things around impressively. They fought back from behind on Tuesday and were flawless in the penalty shootout, with their goalkeeper not required to make a single save.

Italy made a strong start as Moise Kean fired them ahead in the 15th minute. However, their momentum took a hit when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off just before halftime, giving Bosnia and Herzegovina team renewed belief.

Bosnia capitalized late, with Haris Tabakovic equalizing 11 minutes from time to force penalties. In the shootout, Italy faltered as Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed their attempts, while Bosnia were flawless, replicating their semi-final shootout success over Wales.

Youngster Kerim Alajbegovic once again proved decisive, calmly converting a crucial penalty to seal Bosnia’s memorable victory.

The much-anticipated clash in Zenica turned into a thrilling, high-tempo contest rather than the cautious battle many expected. Italy struck first after a mistake by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, allowing Nicolo Barella to set up Moise Kean for a stunning long-range finish.

Bosnia and Herzegovina responded strongly, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into multiple saves. Italy’s task grew tougher when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off before halftime. Bosnia kept pushing and found their breakthrough through Tabakovic after a rebound.

In the shootout, Italy faltered while Bosnia were flawless, sealing victory as Esmir Bajraktarevic converted the decisive kick, sparking wild celebrations.
