FIFA World Cup 2026 Day 6: Messi’s Argentina begin title defense
FIFA World Cup 2026 Matchday 6 promises a packed schedule featuring four intriguing group-stage encounters, with defending champions Argentina and 2022 runners-up France both set to begin their campaigns. Beyond the tournament heavyweights, the day also shines a spotlight on several nations making long-awaited returns to the world's biggest soccer stage.

The action begins in Group I as France face Senegal. The matchup carries historical significance, recalling Senegal's famous victory over Les Bleus in the teams' opening game at the 2002 World Cup in Seoul. More than two decades later, both sides meet again on soccer's grandest stage with another important group-stage result at stake.

Later in the day, Boston Stadium hosts a clash between Norway and Iraq. The match will mark Erling Haaland's long-awaited FIFA World Cup debut as Norway compete in the tournament for the first time since 1998. Iraq, meanwhile, returned to the finals for the first time in four decades, adding another compelling storyline to the contest.

Attention then shifts to Group J, where Lionel Messi's Argentina begin the defense of their world title against two-time African champions Algeria. The reigning champions will look to start their campaign on a winning note against an Algerian side eager to make an early statement.

The day's final fixture sees Austria take on Jordan. Austria are back at the World Cup after a 28-year absence, while Jordan are making their tournament debut after reaching the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
