As one of the tournament's co-hosts, Canada secured automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and was placed in Group B with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland. The tournament represents only the third World Cup appearance in Les Rouges' history, following their debut in Mexico in 1986 and their return to the global stage in Qatar in 2022.
Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina brought a 12-year wait for a second World Cup berth to an end in dramatic style. The team rallied from behind against both Wales and Italy before prevailing in two penalty shootouts to secure its place at the 2026 World Cup.
Bosnia and Herzegovina had previously advanced to the play-offs for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where their campaign ended against Portugal. The nation later earned direct qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and, during that period, climbed to as high as eighth in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking, according to FIFA's official website.
