Alex Bregman joins Cubs: A five-year, $175 million contract in one of MLB’s biggest free-agency deals

In one of the most anticipated moves of the 2025–26 Major League Baseball offseason, three-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman has agreed to a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, marking a major splash in free agency and a substantial upgrade for the North Siders’ lineup.

After a lengthy period on the open market, Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs struck a deal worth $35 million average annual value (AAV), the highest single-season average in Cubs franchise history. The contract includes a full no-trade clause and no opt-out provisions, giving Bregman security and control over his next chapter.

This deal comes after Bregman declined to exercise a $40 million player option with the Boston Red Sox and instead re-entered free agency for the second consecutive winter, seeking a long-term home.

Bregman’s recent performance and value

In the 2025 season, Bregman played 114 games with the Red Sox, batting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, despite spending time on the injured list due to a quadriceps strain. His performance earned him another All-Star nod, his third of his career, even with that missed time.

Over a ten-year Major League career, Bregman has been among the elite third basemen in the league. His career slash line sits around .272/.365/.481, with over 200 home runs and a 43.1 WAR, reflecting his consistent offensive and defensive contributions.

From Astros to Red Sox to Cubs

Drafted second overall by the Houston Astros in 2015, Bregman quickly became one of the cornerstones of a dynasty that included two World Series championships (2017 and 2022) and four straight American League pennants. His tenure in Houston showcased powerful hitting, excellent plate discipline, and strong defense at third base.

After nine seasons with the Astros, Bregman signed with the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million deal before ultimately opting out after one year. His decision to test free agency again reflected both his desire for long-term security and high market value.

Bregman’s presence is expected to bolster a lineup featuring young stars and established hitters, potentially forming a potent offensive core capable of competing in a strong National League Central division.
