WHY ARE BIRDS PUTTING CIGARETTE BUTTS IN THEIR NESTS?
The study examined an urban population of house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) breeding on the campus of the National University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City during the 2011 breeding season. Researchers found cigarette-filter material incorporated into the nests and investigated whether it might be more than accidental litter. The key question was whether the material could help birds defend their nests against ectoparasites - tiny organisms such as parasitic mites that live on or around their hosts. Cigarette tobacco contains chemicals with insect-repelling properties. Researchers therefore suspected that discarded filters, particularly those from smoked cigarettes, might retain compounds capable of discouraging some arthropods.
SMOKED BUTTS APPEARED TO REPEL MORE PARASITES
To investigate the idea, researchers used heat traps containing cellulose fibers taken from smoked and unsmoked cigarettes. The traps attracted parasites toward the fibers, allowing the scientists to compare their responses. The difference was striking. Traps containing fibers from smoked cigarettes attracted fewer parasites than those containing fibers from unsmoked cigarettes. The researchers noted that smoked cigarette material contains more nicotine, suggesting that nicotine or other chemicals produced during smoking could contribute to the repellent effect. The researchers also examined actual bird nests. They found that nests containing more cellulose acetate - the material used in cigarette filters - tended to have fewer parasitic mites. That does not prove that birds deliberately choose cigarette brands because of their nicotine content. However, it raises an intriguing possibility that the birds may have learned to use discarded materials that provide some protection against parasites.
A CLEVER ADAPTATION WITH A POTENTIAL DOWNSIDE
From the birds’ perspective, cigarette filters may offer an easily available nesting material in cities. If certain chemicals discourage parasites, incorporating the material could potentially reduce the burden on chicks and adult birds. But researchers caution against viewing cigarette butts as a safe or beneficial nesting material. Cigarette filters can contain a mixture of chemicals, including substances with harmful effects. The study specifically notes that cigarette butts contain compounds known to be carcinogenic. That creates an unusual trade-off. A material that may help repel some parasites could simultaneously expose birds and their offspring to toxic substances.
"It really makes me wonder: might these birds show a preference for cigarette brands high in nicotine? If they did, that might suggest this behavior has truly evolved as an adaptive response to challenges from parasites," Timothy Mousseau, an ecologist at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, said, according to SciTechDaily.
The discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into how wildlife can adapt to heavily urbanized environments. House sparrows and house finches do not understand cigarette butts in the human sense, but they may recognize useful properties in materials available around them. The research suggests that smoked cigarette filters can discourage some arthropods and that nests containing more filter material may have fewer parasitic mites.
At the same time, the findings do not mean cigarette butts are good for birds. Their chemical contents can create serious risks, making this an example of adaptation to an environment that humans have altered. The study ultimately highlights how resourceful urban wildlife can be - while also showing how pollution can become unexpectedly woven into the lives of animals living alongside us.
