Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic made its surprise debut in the opening minutes of The Game Awards 2025, signaling a major return to one of the franchise’s most celebrated RPG eras. The game is in development at Arcanaut Studios under the leadership of Casey Hudson, the original director behind both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy.
His involvement instantly frames the project as a true spiritual successor to KOTOR, despite not carrying the series’ name.
Star Wars is a legendary sci-fi franchise set in a galaxy far, far away, blending epic space battles, complex characters, and the mystical Force. Since its debut in 1977, it has become a cultural phenomenon spanning films, TV series, books, and games.
According to the official description, “Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic” is a single-player, narrative-focused action RPG that places players in the role of a Force user navigating a galaxy poised for rebirth.
“Working on ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ was one of the defining experiences of my career,” Hudson said. “With ‘Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic,’ we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since, crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark. It’s a dream come true to once again collaborate with Lucasfilm Games.”
Disney Games Group president Jay Ong said the company partnered with Casey Hudson because of his “drive and leadership to build something groundbreaking,” praising Arcanaut Studios’ passion for deep storytelling and world-building.
Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly called the Old Republic era a “rich and beloved” corner of the Star Wars universe and said the teams are exploring a fresh, never-before-seen story with this project. Both executives emphasized that Arcanaut’s ambitious vision will excite fans, with more details still to come.
