Samsung’s New Deadline
Samsung has announced a major shift in how millions of Galaxy phone owners will send SMS and rich messaging going forward: its long-standing Samsung Messages app will be discontinued in July 2026, and users are being urged to migrate to Google Messages as the default communications platform. This decision caps years of gradual transition and reflects broader consolidation around Google’s software ecosystem on Android devices.

Why Samsung is retiring its messages app

Samsung’s built-in Samsung Messages application, a staple on Galaxy devices for over a decade, will reach its end of life this July. The company has issued an “End of Service” notice confirming that the app will stop functioning for most devices once July 2026 arrives, after which sending and receiving texts through the app will no longer be supported, except for emergency service numbers or emergency contacts.

The discontinuation primarily affects phones running Android 12 or newer; devices on Android 11 or earlier will continue to support Samsung Messages because of compatibility limitations with newer communications standards.

Samsung has already been nudging users toward Google’s platform in recent years: several recent Galaxy models ship with Google Messages pre-installed and set as the default SMS/RCS app, and the Samsung Messages app has been absent from the Galaxy Store on these devices.

What this means for Galaxy users

Galaxy owners must take action before the deadline this July. Samsung’s official guidelines recommend that users download and install Google Messages from the Play Store and designate it as the default messaging application before the shutdown occurs.

Migrating to Google Messages ensures continuity of standard messaging functions (SMS/MMS) and access to the modern RCS (Rich Communication Services) standard, which brings features like high-quality media sharing, group chat capabilities, and real-time typing indicators to compatible Android devices, similar to Apple’s iMessage on iOS.

After July, Samsung Messages will still operate only in limited ways for emergency contacts or emergency service numbers, but everyday texting will require Google’s platform. The exact shutdown date in July will appear within the Samsung Messages app itself as an in-app notification for users.

Benefits Samsung says Google Messages offers

Samsung and technology sites highlight several advantages that come with Google Messages:

  • RCS Support: Enhances traditional SMS with multimedia and richer chat features that work across devices.
  • AI-Powered Features: Integration with generative AI for functions like smart replies and photo remixing via Google’s Gemini AI.
  • Multi-Device Connectivity: Messaging continuity across phones, tablets, and some smartwatches.
  • Spam and Scam Detection: Built-in tools helping filter unwanted messages.
These improvements aim to deliver a more unified and capable messaging experience, particularly as Android devices increasingly lean on Google’s software layers.

Potential downsides and user concerns

Not all reactions to this change have been positive. Some Galaxy users in online communities express frustration about losing Samsung Messages’ unique customization and UI integration with One UI, preferring its look and feel over Google’s more generic interface. Others cite concerns about forced dependency on Google’s ecosystem and data practices.

There are also functional caveats: on older Samsung smartwatches that run Tizen OS, full conversation histories may not be viewable once messaging transitions to Google’s platform, although basic send/receive capabilities will remain.

For Galaxy users, the key takeaway is clear: act before July to transition to Google Messages and avoid disruptions in daily communications.
