Altruism is the act of caring about others and helping them without expecting anything in return. When a person shows altruism, they think about the needs of others before their own comfort or benefit. This can be seen in simple actions, like helping a neighbor, donating to charity, or listening to someone who is struggling. Altruism is not about getting praise, rewards, or attention. It comes from a genuine desire to make someone else’s life better. People who practice altruism believe that kindness and compassion are important values in life. Even small, everyday acts of altruism can create positive change and build stronger relationships within communities.

ORIGIN OF ALTRUISM

The term 'altruism' comes from the French word altruisme, coined in the 19th century by philosopher Auguste Comte. It is derived from the Italian altrui, meaning 'of or to others', which in turn traces back to the Latin alter, meaning 'other'. Comte used the term to express the moral principle of living for the benefit of others, a concept that lies at the heart of his philosophy of positivism.

WHY ALTRUISM MATTERS IN LIFE

Altruism plays an important role in making the world a better place. When people help each other selflessly, trust and cooperation grow. This leads to healthier families, safer communities, and more caring societies. Altruism also benefits the person who gives. Studies show that helping others can improve happiness, reduce stress, and give life a deeper sense of purpose.

In difficult times, altruistic actions remind us that we are not alone. They encourage hope and unity, especially during crises or hardships. While altruism does not always bring material success, it brings emotional fulfillment and inner peace. By choosing to act with kindness and empathy, people create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same, spreading goodwill far beyond a single act.
