Winter storm warning in US: These states are expected to receive heavy snow this week

Many parts of the US received heavy rainfall over the weekend and into this week as the Nor’easter storm system sat over the Northeast, bringing widespread flooding and strong waves to the east coast. At the same time, tropical moisture linked with Hurricane Polo is likely to continue northward into the Southwest/Great Basin and the Central/Southern Rockies, producing showers and thunderstorms with heavy downpour on Monday. As heavy rain hits many states, some regions at higher elevation are expected to receive thick snow.

In Alaska, lower temperatures are expected to settle in through the middle of the week, which could allow accumulation of up to six inches of snow through Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning, saying that "heavy" snowfall beginning Monday night could potentially lead to slippery travel conditions along the Isabel Pass.

Washington braces for snow again

Washington, which has been hit by several snow storms over the last week, is again bracing for snowfall from Monday night through Wednesday. A map released by the Seattle/Tacoma office of the National Weather Service shows that higher elevations such as Mount Baker could see up to 16 inches of snow by Wednesday.

In Colorado, snow was reported last week at Pikes Peak, Torreys Peak, and Uncompahgre Peak. Meanwhile, Southwestern Colorado ski areas -- Telluride Ski Resort and Wolf Creek Ski Area -- have also witnessed a fresh dusting of snow.

Monarch, Wolf Creek, and La Veta passes fall inside the shaded areas on the Pueblo map. Wet snow on those passes is expected to turn icy overnight and early in the morning. And, shaded switchbacks are the last stretches to clear after the sun is up.

Nor’easter storm batters US

Over the weekend, a strong storm battered the US east coast, causing flooding, gusty winds, and power outages in parts of the country. Coastal flooding, rough surf, powerful winds, rain, and hazardous rip currents hit states from North Carolina through New England.

Boston and the New York City tri-state areas were among the areas affected by the storm. In New York, more than 21,000 customers were left without electricity at one point. At least one person was killed and hundreds of thousands remained without electricity across the US as a result of the powerful storm.
