Why Some U.S. Snakes Stay Active After Dark

Snakes are not strictly day or night hunters. Their activity depends on warmth, food, and safety. In some areas, snakes hunt at night to find more prey or escape extreme heat. This makes snake behavior unpredictable. Studies show that even within ...

Why Some U.S. Snakes Stay Active After Dark
Snakes have usually been categorized as being either diurnal or nocturnal, but evidence from scientific studies indicates that their activity level varies considerably, according to environmental factors such as temperature, habitat, and time of year. As cold-blooded animals, snakes need warmth to carry out metabolic functions, and one would therefore expect them to be inactive at night.

Contrary to expectations, studies carried out in ecological science publications like the journal Animals (MDPI) prove that this does not hold true for all snake species. Many snake species in different locations around the world engage in nocturnal activity, which is common and allows them to be observed moving about after dark in various areas of the United States, including Florida and parts of Texas.

The Tradeoff Between Heat and Opportunity

As far as why snakes prefer hunting during the night, it is all about compromise. According to research findings in the Journal of Thermal Biology, although temperature positively influences mobility and digestion, nighttime hunting may provide other benefits. For instance, predators might be less likely to hunt prey animals during nighttime hours, and potential meals could be more available since some species, such as rats and amphibians, might be more active at night. In other words, it is possible for a snake to tolerate colder temperatures if the likelihood of acquiring food is high. The data also revealed that in extremely warm habitats, temperatures during the day may become intolerable, which makes nighttime activity the better choice.

Why Does This Make Snake Behavior Hard to Predict?

This dilemma helps us understand the seemingly erratic behavior of snakes. A species that is diurnal in nature under one circumstance may become nocturnal in others. There have been studies using telemetry devices that prove that there may be variations within a single species in their activity depending on their immediate surroundings. What needs to be remembered is that the behavior of snakes is always adaptive and never rigid. It is dependent on three factors – temperature, food availability, and environmental threats.
