WHAT KING CHARLES’ OFFICIAL GUIDANCE SAYS

The letter shared with Harry's team and sent to senior officials states that Harry and Meghan are 'no longer working Members of The Royal Family' after stepping down from official duties in 2020.


"This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected," the letter read as quoted by Reuters.

"It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. ... The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity.

"In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests."



WHY THEIR RETURN TO THE UK DOES NOT CHANGE THEIR ROLE

Harry and Meghan returned to Britain late last month, six years after leaving royal duties and moving to the United States. Their return could have raised questions about whether they might resume some form of official royal role. However, the King's guidance draws a clear distinction between their presence in Britain and participation in official royal duties.

The couple stepped down from those duties in 2020 to pursue independent careers. Their decision changed their relationship with the working Royal Family, while their return to the UK does not automatically reverse that arrangement. The guidance instead confirms that their position remains separate from the official work undertaken by working royals.

The letter also addresses Harry and Meghan's charitable activities. It states that their charitable work is a personal matter and is carried out in their private capacity. Harry has accused the royal family of neglecting him, blamed the tabloid press for damaging his life, and criticized the government over what he said was inadequate security that made it difficult for him to return home.

King Charles’ latest guidance leaves little ambiguity about Harry and Meghan’s current royal status.
