A few days after the investigation began into the disappearance of Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of NBC ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie, authorities believed that she was taken away from her home against her will, alleging abduction.
Nancy vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona on January 31, 2026 and was reported missing by her family members the next day. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Guthrie was scheduled to go to a friend’s home on Sunday, February 1, 2026 to watch a livestream of mass. When she did not show up and could not be contacted, concerned friends notified her family, prompting further action.
The case continues to raise questions four months after she was first reported missing, with investigators and residents in southern Arizona still searching for answers. With investigation stretching over three months now, limited public information has emerged, and those closest to Guthrie have largely remained silent.
Brian Entin, who is a senior national correspondent for NewsNation, has been reporting on the case. He claimed that decision appears to be intentional. “We’ve heard from several that the Guthrie family has asked Nancy’s close friends to keep things private right now,” Entin told online platform Parade. “You haven’t seen a lot of her close friends come forward and talk about her, which is different than other cases.”
Entin further emphasized that there is a sense of unease among residents in the Tucson area, where the case has drawn sustained attention.
“I also think people here are still nervous about the whole thing. For us covering it, we live in different states, but people who live here in Tucson, especially in the neighborhood, these kinds of things don’t happen, and the fact that there’s no new information and they have no idea who did it, I think people are just still nervous about the whole thing, which might be why you don’t see as many people talking about it,” Entin elaborated.
He further said that individuals connected to Nancy have taken varying approaches to speaking publicly, even though early developments in the case involved her church community. “It’s been interesting to see who wants to talk and who doesn’t,” Entin stated, pointing out that Guthrie’s church friends were the first people to alert others that she didn’t show up and wasn’t answering calls. “No one has said anything.”
Brian Entin is set to host an upcoming television special, “NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery,” scheduled to air on The CW on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
