A homemade lemon scrub is considered an age-old method for DIY cleaning since it comes across as an easy-to-make, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly option, but it has more uses than most individuals realize. Whereas lemon is known for its strong germ-fighting ability, cleaning and disinfection are two distinct processes according to public health directives.
While the former is done by washing surfaces with soap or a cleaning agent, which effectively removes soil and bacteria, the latter entails a process undertaken under different circumstances.

Cleaning with soap or detergent in bathrooms typically addresses issues such as soap scum, hard water stains, and residue on surfaces. Here, the lemon scrub might prove useful in eliminating these stains since it is capable of loosening them and offers a little abrasive action to leave surfaces smoother.

This is where the scrub's usefulness comes into play.

Why lemon is not a true disinfectant

The ability of lemons to clean owes to their being acidic. However, it should be clarified that experts claim that acidity is not synonymous with disinfecting. It is possible to have a shiny appearance after cleaning, which does not imply meeting any hygienic standards.

According to the CDC, disinfection requires using EPA-registered products in accordance with instructions and leaving them wet for an obligatory period. Thus, cleaning with lemon does not imply disinfection according to the CDC's guidelines. In addition, according to the WHO, cleaning comes before applying disinfectants, if necessary, in high-risk settings.

Therefore, even though lemon cleaning may assist with the process of regular cleaning, it cannot be regarded as a substitute for disinfection.

Where a lemon scrub fits best

This does not mean that lemon scrub is useless. It may come in handy in light cleaning tasks, such as removing any soap film from the sink or getting rid of any dirt on appropriate surfaces.

It must be admitted that there are risks involved, and therefore, professionals recommend exercising caution. For instance, acidic formulas may not work well on certain surfaces; hence, the importance of conducting a test first.

One should treat lemon scrub as just another element in the arsenal of cleaning tools. A homemade lemon scrub could be useful in removing dirt and even giving some additional shine. One thing it will never be able to do is replace traditional cleaning and, where required, disinfecting procedures.

And this might be what makes such an old technique really workable.
