Who is Ryan Mendes? Cape Verde captain reportedly under investigation for alleged rape in New Zealand
Cape Verde's World Cup star Ryan Mendes is under investigation in New Zealand for an alleged rape involving a FIFA support worker. The incident reportedly occurred in March after a match. Mendes, the team's captain and top scorer, has not been cha...

Reports allege that the incident occurred at a hotel following the match. The Brazilian woman has alleged to authorities in New Zealand that Mendes forced his way into her hotel room and raped her, according to media reports. The matter was reportedly raised with a Cape Verde team official the following day. As of now, Mendes has not been charged with any offense, and the investigation remains ongoing.
New Zealand police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, as reported by New Zealand Herald, but have not released additional details. According to The Athletic, FIFA has also acknowledged awareness of the matter, stating that it treats allegations of misconduct seriously and is in contact with local authorities.
The situation has drawn attention because of Mendes’ importance to the national team. The 36-year-old is one of Cape Verde’s most accomplished players, holding the country’s appearance record and ranking as its all-time leading goal scorer. He was also selected as captain for the team’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
Cape Verde has been one of the tournament’s surprise teams, earning results against several higher-ranked opponents and advancing to the Round of 32 in its first World Cup appearance. The team is currently scheduled to face Argentina in Miami on July 3 in its next knockout-stage match, and no official changes regarding Mendes’ playing status have been announced.
In another incident, Achraf Hakimi, captain of Morocco and a player for Paris Saint-Germain, is set to stand trial in France over allegations of rape connected to an incident that allegedly took place at his home in Boulogne-Billancourt in February 2023.

Hakimi has denied the allegations and previously sought to have the case dismissed. Following the decision for the matter to proceed to trial, he responded by issuing a statement on X.
“Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: ‘If you weren’t famous, there never would have been a case.’ I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made," his post read.
“Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. Sometimes I feel like I’ve become an easy target.
