Ternus has spent over two decades rising through the company’s ranks. He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013. In 2021, he entered the executive team as senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting directly to Tim Cook.Ternus has overseen major hardware programs, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods, and played a key role in reviving Mac sales and expanding market share. He also led the unveiling of the iPhone Air, Apple’s most significant redesign since 2017.
Before Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems and earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Ternus will take over as CEO on September 1, succeeding Cook, who will become executive chairman. At 50, he matches Cook’s age when he succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011.
According to Bloomberg, Ternus has played a central role in shaping product roadmaps, guiding feature decisions, and steering long-term strategy - going far beyond the typical scope of an engineering leader.
Cook praised Ternus in Apple’s official announcement, describing him as someone who combines “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and honor.” He added that Ternus is a visionary leader whose contributions to Apple Inc. over the past 25 years are extensive, and expressed full confidence that he is the right person to guide the company into the future.
John Ternus was born in May 1975 and showed an early interest in how things are designed and built, steering him toward engineering. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also competed on the varsity swim team.
Graduating in 1997, he focused on practical, user-centered design. His senior project—a mechanical feeding arm—reflected his ability to combine technical precision with real-world human needs.
After graduating, Ternus joined Virtual Research Systems as a mechanical engineer, working there from 1997 to 2001 on early virtual reality hardware such as head-mounted displays and interface systems. The role exposed him to cutting-edge design challenges.
JOHN TERNUS'S NET WORTH
Ternus has built his entire career at Apple Inc., and his financial standing reflects more than two decades at one of the world’s most valuable companies.
