Fresh details have emerged in the death of Jamey Carney, the U.S. woman found murdered at her home in Killarney, Ireland. A postmortem examination found that the 43-year-old mother died from suffocation, according to State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan. These findings were reported by the Irish Times on Thursday, July 9, 2026. This comes after initial reports claimed that the 43-year-old had been beaten to death.

The Irish news outlet established that while she was the victim of an assault and had suffered head injuries, Mulligan determined that the actual cause of death was suffocation. Carney’s body was discovered at a domestic residence in Killarney on Tuesday afternoon (July 7, 2026), Ireland’s national police service, said in a press statement.

Who is Jamey Carney?

Carney, an Irish American, moved from the United States to Killarney, Ireland, in 2021 with her daughter. The 43-year-old, a New York native, was found dead by a relative, according to the Irish Times, citing authorities and her family. A third-generation Irish American, Carney was originally from Westchester County, just north of New York City. She relocated to Ireland with her daughter in May 2021 and settled in Killarney, a town she had previously visited on holiday.

For the past four and a half years, Carney had been employed with RelateCare in Tralee. While her mother and sister continue to reside in the United States, her father passed away 11 months ago, according to the Irish Times. To support her grieving relatives during this time, a family liaison officer has been officially appointed.

Police have released few details about the homicide investigation. However, according to the Irish Times, BBC News, and Irish national broadcaster RTÉ, investigators are seeking to speak with a man who has since left the country. The man has been identified by police as a person of interest in the case and is believed to have known Carney, according to BBC News and RTÉ.

Irish police now believe the man boarded a flight from Dublin Airport to Turkey. Investigators believe he was already on the flight before Carney's body was discovered by a family member at the home she shared with her 13-year-old daughter in the Homeland area off Muckross Road in Killarney.
