Frederick Alfred Jr., a Republican running for a state senate seat in Colorado, was arrested in Florida on Monday (April 20, 2026). The arrest occurred in Key West on two counts of felony child neglect without great harm after police said he left his children unattended to go to a bar, during which time his daughter began drowning in a swimming pool.

According to police, his 4-year-old daughter began drowning in the pool, became unconscious, started foaming at the mouth, and eventually needed CPR from someone at the pool, TMZ reported, citing a police report obtained.

Authorities also said that his 6-year-old son swallowed water and also needed medical attention after attempting to save his sister. According to the report, 38-year-old Alfred was MIA for around 6 minutes after someone called 911, and when he showed up, he was holding an alcoholic beverage.

Police said Alfred told officers he left his two children alone at a hot tub to go to a bar to get alcohol, claiming he was gone for only five minutes, TMZ reported. Authorities added that he smelled strongly of alcohol, and a bar receipt allegedly showed he purchased two cocktails; he was subsequently booked into the Monroe County Jail.
