Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed that account after reviewing video footage of the incident, publicly criticizing ICE’s actions and rejecting federal claims about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Who is Derek Chauvin?
Derek Chauvin is a former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in 2021 for murdering George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, during an arrest on May 25, 2020. Chauvin was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, a moment that sparked nationwide protests and a global reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice.
Chauvin is serving a state prison sentence for murder, along with a separate federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights.
Why is Derek Chauvin’s name being raised now?
Derek Chauvin’s name re-entered public debate after commentator John Cardillo explicitly invoked it in a social media post following the killing of Renee Nicole Good. Cardillo wrote, “Trump should pardon Derek Chauvin tonight and let Minneapolis burn,” a statement that went viral, viewed more than 739k times and quickly brought hundreds of other users to comment.
The renewed attention may have also been shaped by geography and brought back dark memories to the area. Good was killed near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, just a short distance from George Floyd Square, the intersection of East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue where Floyd was killed by police in 2020.
