France has formally restricted US Ambassador Charles Kushner’s access to senior government officials after he failed to appear at a meeting at the foreign ministry, intensifying tensions between Paris and Washington.

The move comes amid controversy over US State Department comments on the killing of 23-year-old far-right activist Quentin Deranque in Lyon, remarks that French officials have denounced as political interference in a sensitive domestic matter.

According to the Guardian website, Charles Kushner, whose son Jared is married to Ivanka Trump, eldest daughter of Donald Trump, was summoned by Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot after the US Embassy in Paris reposted State Department comments on the case.

Who is Charles Kushner?

Charles Kushner is an American real estate developer and billionaire investor, best known as the founder of Kushner Companies and the father of Jared Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, the eldest daughter of US President Donald Trump.

In 2005, Kushner pleaded guilty to 16 federal charges including tax evasion, making false statements and witness tampering, serving 14 months in prison before receiving a presidential pardon from Trump in 2020.

He was appointed US ambassador to France last year.

French diplomatic sources said Kushner missed the meeting, citing personal commitments, and sent a senior official instead. It was Kushner’s second missed meeting since his appointment to the Paris embassy last year.

According to Guardian website, he previously skipped a ministry meeting in August after publishing an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron criticizing what he called insufficient action against the “dramatic rise of antisemitism in France.”

The foreign ministry said, “In light of this apparent failure to grasp the basic requirements of the ambassadorial mission, the minister has requested that he no longer be allowed direct access to members of the French government.”

The ministry said Kushner may continue discussions with foreign ministry officials to address tensions in the 250-year-old bilateral relationship.

The case

Quentin Deranque, 23, died of head injuries after clashes between radical left and far-right groups during a February 12 protest in Lyon against a France Unbowed (LFI) politician. In connection with Deranque’s killing, six men have been charged, along with an LFI parliamentary assistant accused of complicity.

The US State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism said it is monitoring the case.

“We expect to see the perpetrators of violence brought to justice,” US embassy added.

Deranque’s death also strained France-Italy ties after Giorgia Meloni called it “a wound for all of Europe,” drawing criticism from Macron for interfering in French affairs.
