Angie Nixon is a Democratic state representative from Jacksonville, Florida, who has served in the Florida House since 2020. A progressive voice in the state legislature, Nixon has been active in labor organizing and built a reputation for challenging Republican leadership in Florida. She recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and campaigned on issues including healthcare, education and economic concerns affecting working families. On Tuesday, Nixon pulled off a major upset by defeating retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, a former national security official who became nationally known after testifying during Donald Trump's first impeachment in 2019. Nixon will now face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November's special election for Florida's US Senate seat.

At 42, Nixon has built her political profile around progressive causes and her experience in Florida’s labor movement. Her campaign attracted support from prominent figures on the Democratic left, including Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, giving Nixon a boost among progressive voters. Her background and campaign have helped her emerge as a distinctive progressive voice in Florida politics. A victory in the November general election would also make Nixon the first Black US senator from Florida, marking a historic milestone for the state.

Nixon also made headlines earlier this year during a protest over congressional redistricting legislation in the Florida House. She was reprimanded after disrupting a legislative vote while using a pink megaphone. She later turned the incident into a campaign message, encouraging supporters to bring the same spirit to Election Day with the slogan, 'make sure you wear your pink to the polls'.

Nixon entered Florida’s Democratic Senate primary as a significant underdog, with far fewer financial resources than her rival, Vindman. Nixon, a state representative and member of the DSA, had raised about $975,000 by the end of July, compared with Vindman’s $16.3 million, reported The Guardian citing Florida Politics. Vindman, a former national security official in Trump’s first administration, gained national attention as a whistleblower and key witness during Trump’s first impeachment. His testimony focused on Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden.

Despite his strong national profile and substantial fundraising advantage, Vindman’s campaign largely concentrated on the potential general-election matchup against Republican Sen. Moody rather than his Democratic primary challenger. He also declined Nixon’s calls for a debate, reported the media outlet. Moody, who was appointed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to fill Marco Rubio’s Senate seat after Rubio became secretary of state, faced little opposition in the Republican primary. She will campaign in November to serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
