Conservatives erupted after Virginia’s new Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, rolled out early policies, branding her the “White Witch” and a “Bond villain” despite her moderate campaign pitch.
In her first week, Spanberger scrapped a mandatory ICE cooperation policy and pledged to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
According to the New York Post website, the proposals range from higher taxes on services like UberEats and wealthy earners to banning gas-powered leaf blowers, restricting anti-abortion protests, and taxing firearm suppressors.
“We’re setting the tone for what Virginians can expect over the next four years: pragmatic leadership focused on lowering costs, growing our economy, and making sure that every parent knows that their child is set up for success,” Spanberger crowed about her early actions.
Who is Abigail Spanberger?
Before becoming governor, Spanberger represented Virginia’s 7th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives for three terms (2019-2025), where she gained a reputation as a centrist Democrat willing to work across party lines.
She was sworn in as governor after defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears by about 15 percentage points in the 2025 election.
Spanberger’s career before elected office included service in the Central Intelligence Agency, where she worked as a case officer on national security issues from 2006 to 2014, and earlier work as a US Postal Inspection Service agent.
Spanberger has yet to address several contentious Democratic proposals, fueling conservative concerns she may yield to the party’s left wing.
Personal life and family
Abigail Spanberger, born Abigail Anne Davis in 1979 in New Jersey, is the eldest of three daughters of Martin and Eileen Davis. Fascinated by languages from a young age, she taught herself Spanish and later learned French, German, and Italian, while also developing an early interest in politics as a page for U.S. Sen. Charles Robb.
She earned a French literature degree from the University of Virginia and a master’s in business from Purdue University, later marrying her beau, Adam Spanberger, with whom she has three daughters and lives in Glen Allen, Virginia.
Spanberger, a former CIA officer, overturned Youngkin’s ICE cooperation order, drawing conservative backlash with critics calling her the “White Witch” and a “Bond villain.” Her early actions focus on affordability, including studying ways to cut living costs, reviewing healthcare, and assessing DOGE cuts, sparking debate over how far she will embrace the Democratic Party’s progressive agenda.
