Along with President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of his Cabinet were present at the high-profile event and all were escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents after the shooting was heard as guests reportedly took cover under tables while security teams secured the venue.
The incident also drew comparisons to a historic attack at the same venue. The Washington Hilton is the same building where former US President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981 while leaving the hotel after a speech.
At that time, John Hinckley Jr. fired his .22 caliber revolver with “devastator” bullets at Reagan and his security team. Reagan was wounded after a bullet ricocheted off the limousine and struck him under his left armpit. After spending twelve days in the hospital, he returned to the White House.
