A local teacher was diagnosed with skin cancer in its early stages. Courtney Voss noticed a small freckle on her face, which led her dermatologist to perform a biopsy, as reported by ABC 7 Eyewitness News. Tests confirmed it was melanoma. To treat the disease, Voss underwent several surgeries, including plastic and facial reconstructive procedures, according to the news outlet. The operations were carried out to remove the cancer and repair the affected areas.

Voss has now recovered and is cancer free. Her case highlights the importance of early detection and timely medical intervention in addressing skin cancer.

What is Melanoma?

According to Mayo Clinic, Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that starts in the melanocytes. They are cells that make the pigment, known as melanin, that gives skin its color. Melanoma typically starts on skin that's often exposed to the sun.


Considered as the most invasive skin cancer, Melanoma has the highest risk of death, according to Cleveland Clinic. Although it's a serious skin cancer, it's highly curable if diagnosed early. Prevention and early treatment are especially important, particularly for people with fair skin, blonde or red hair, and blue eyes. The exact cause of melanoma is not fully understood. Most cases are linked to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which comes from the sun as well as tanning lamps and tanning beds. Reducing exposure to UV light may help lower the risk of developing melanoma.

The risk of melanoma appears to be rising among people under the age of 40, particularly women. Early signs of melanoma often show up as changes in the skin. This can include a shift in the appearance of an existing mole or the sudden development of a new pigmented spot that looks unusual, according to Mayo Clinic.

While many cases begin with a mole, melanoma is not limited to that and can also appear on skin that previously looked healthy. The symptoms are not confined to one part of the body. Melanoma can occur anywhere, but it is most commonly found in areas that receive regular exposure to the sun. The arms, back, face, and legs are among the places where these changes are most likely to develop, making them important areas to watch closely.
