A Senate Armed Services hearing on March 4, 2026, was briefly disrupted when a protester clashed with law enforcement inside a Capitol committee room, prompting Montana Republican Tim Sheehy to step in and assist officers.

The hearing, held by the United States Senate Armed Services Committee, focused on military readiness and US defense policy. Approximately 30 minutes into the session, a man later identified by authorities as Brian C. McGinnis stood up and began shouting objections related to US foreign policy, including opposition to potential military engagement involving Iran and Israel.

According to video footage circulated, McGinnis continued shouting despite warnings and refused to leave when ordered.

Officers from the United States Capitol Police moved to escort McGinnis out of the room. The situation escalated when he resisted removal, reportedly grabbing onto a door frame and struggling against officers’ attempts to restrain him.

Footage shows Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and first-term senator, leaving his seat at the dais and assisting officers as they worked to pull the protester free. During the struggle, an audible snapping sound was heard, and the protester later appeared to have sustained an arm injury.

In a statement posted on social media after the incident, Sheehy defended his actions, saying officers were dealing with an “unhinged protestor” who was physically resisting removal. He stated that he stepped in to assist law enforcement and help restore order so the hearing could continue.

Authorities confirmed that McGinnis was arrested following the altercation and transported to a hospital for treatment. Capitol Police also reported that three officers required medical evaluation after the scuffle, though officials did not immediately disclose the extent of their injuries.

Capitol Police announced that McGinnis faces multiple charges, including three counts of assaulting a police officer, three counts of resisting arrest, and one count of crowding, obstructing, and incommoding, a charge related to blocking passageways or disrupting official proceedings.

Police reiterated that demonstrations are not permitted inside congressional buildings, although protests are allowed in designated outdoor areas of the Capitol complex.

McGinnis has been identified in prior reports as affiliated with the Green Party of the United States, and has previously expressed opposition to US military involvement abroad.

The incident has sparked debate over the appropriateness of an elected official physically intervening during an arrest. While supporters argue Sheehy was assisting law enforcement during an active disruption, critics question whether senators should engage directly in enforcement actions.
