They reveal a rare and puzzling behavior that has left researchers both fascinated and curious.

The footage, captured by marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer Katy Ayres, shows one orca gripping a sunfish by the tail while another charges at full speed, slamming into the fish until it bursts apart. Divers just meters away witnessed the dramatic scene unfold, documenting how these predators worked together in a way that seemed less about survival and more about something else entirely.

Scientists from Beneath The Waves and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology studied the events closely, noting that the orcas might have been breaking the fish apart to make sharing easier among the group. Yet the researchers also suggested another possibility, that this was “play behaviour.” The orcas could have been smashing the dead sunfish simply for fun, a striking reminder that even apex predators sometimes engage in activities beyond the hunt.

“Sunfish are unusual prey: large and oddly shaped, and covered in thick, tough, sharp skin. Ramming and opening them as such may provide safer, more efficient access to the nutrients inside,” explained Austin Gallagher, one of the authors.

The sunfish itself is no ordinary target. Known as the heaviest bony fish on the planet, it is massive, oddly shaped, and armored with thick, rough skin. While an orca can easily kill it, the footage shows that the encounter was not just about predation. Whether for food or play, the spectacle highlights the complexity of orca behavior and the unique challenges posed by the sunfish, a creature whose size and structure make it both formidable and fascinating in the marine world.
