Suspect apprehended: Who is Cole Tomas Allen?
In the immediate aftermath, various media figures and social platforms began circulating the name Cole Tomas Allen as the suspected shooter. Columnist Karol Markowicz, writing for Fox News and New York Post, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the person believed to be responsible was a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, identified as Cole Tomas Allen.
Initial posts also noted that Allen was taken into custody after confronting Secret Service agents near the security checkpoint.
While authorities have confirmed a suspect is in custody, officials have not yet independently verified or released detailed information about his identity or background. Law enforcement is continuing its investigation, and caution remains necessary as early reports evolve.
How the incident unfolded
Reports from witnesses described hearing multiple shots ring out, instantly triggering chaos among the approximate 2,600 attendees. Guests reportedly ducked under tables and took cover as Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel sprang into action.
According to Reuters, Secret Service officers quickly evacuated President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and several other top officials from the venue.
No federal officials or attendees were injured, though at least one law enforcement officer was struck in the protective vest and is expected to recover.
Response from law enforcement and the President
President Trump addressed the nation shortly after the incident, posting on his social media platform Truth Social that the “shooter has been apprehended.” He praised the prompt and effective action of the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of all attendees. Trump also stated that although his initial impulse was to have the dinner continue, the decision to postpone the event was guided by law enforcement advice. Plans were announced to reschedule the dinner within 30 days.
The White House Correspondents’ Association confirmed that no participants were harmed during the incident. Heavy security measures were implemented immediately, and the building was placed on lockdown as authorities secured the area.
How the suspect gained access to a weapon and the secure area remains unclear, and authorities are examining the sequence of events, including any potential lapses in security protocols.
No motivation has been publicly released, and federal agencies including the FBI and Secret Service are investigating.
