In a major escalation of Middle East tensions on February 28, 2026, US President Donald Trump confirmed American involvement in military action against Iran, releasing an eight-minute video on his Truth Social platform announcing a joint campaign with Israel. The attacks on Iran, where the regime of Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei has been battling civil unrest in several regions of the country for the past few months, has also led to the loss of some American lives, though it is not clear whether they are military personnel or civilians.

Trump stated: "The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties that often happens in war, but we're doing this, not for now. We're doing this for the future, and it is a noble mission" acknowledging the possibility of US military losses in the operation, which has sent shockwaves through Washington and allied capitals.

The president framed the campaign as a defensive necessity, saying the “objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from Iran.” Federal officials and US media have reported these coordinated strikes mark the beginning of what Trump described as “major combat operations” following Israeli attacks on Tehran earlier in the day.

In his remarks, the president stressed that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” reiterating longstanding US policy that Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, which Trump and his administration claim include attempts to restart weaponisation, pose unacceptable risks.

Iran "attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and to continue developing long range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas and could seen reach the American homeland," the president asserted, echoing concerns voiced during recent negotiations and US intelligence assessments.

He says that the US is undertaking a "massive" operation to "prevent this very wicked radical dictatorship from threatening America".

The announcement comes amid intense regional instability. Sirens sounded across Israel earlier Saturday, and explosions were reported in Tehran, where cellphone communications have been disrupted and airspace closures implemented.

Israel and Iraq have also shut down their airspaces, reflecting the scale of the regional response.

The situation remains fluid as world leaders and diplomats assess the unfolding conflict.
