Times Square shooting and slashing: Teen in custody after violent fight in New York City

A violent confrontation in the heart of New York City's famed Times Square erupted into chaos on June 18, leaving one person slashed, gunfire ringing through crowded streets, and a teenager taken into police custody. The incident sent tourists, commuters, and visitors scrambling for cover.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the violence began with a large fight involving multiple individuals near the 44th Street and Broadway in Times Square on Thursday afternoon. The altercation escalated rapidly, resulting in a slashing and the discharge of a firearm. Authorities confirmed that a teenager was taken into custody following the incident.



Police said a second shooting broke out near 45th Street and Eighth Avenue shortly after officers took an individual into custody.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as shots were fired in the crowded tourist hub. Videos circulating online showed people running for safety as law enforcement officers rushed to the area.

Police recovered at least one firearm from the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violence.

The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 pm, a time when Times Square is typically filled with tourists, office workers, and visitors.

Authorities said no one was struck by the gunfire, though at least one vehicle was hit by a bullet.

While no gunshot injuries were reported, police confirmed that one individual suffered injuries from a slashing during the confrontation. Officials have not yet released the victim's identity or provided extensive details regarding the severity of the injuries.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that a 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred just hours after New York City's celebration of the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory. Earlier in the day, the team's ticker-tape parade attracted an estimated two million fans to Manhattan.
