Why frost is a bigger problem than it looks

Most of us probably grew up watching our parents remove everything from the freezer, unplug it, and leave it open so the ice would slowly melt. So if you put a pan of boiling water in a foil-lined freezer, the foil absorbs and spreads the warmth from the trapped steam-heated air across its surface, carrying that heat to every corner it touches. The ice does not melt only where the steam first strikes it. It softens wherever the foil touches, which is why the whole process is over so much sooner than just leaving the freezer to thaw on its own.

A few extra tips before you're done

In case there is some stubborn patch that refuses to give in, you do not have to grab a knife. Rather, soak a cloth in hot (not boiling) water, wring it out, and press it onto the stubborn ice through an oven mitt or towel to avoid burns, checking every so often until it loosens. After you get rid of all pieces of ice, wipe the interior dry with a towel to remove excess moisture from the steam before wiping with white vinegar. This also helps the appliance smell fresh.
