The Role of Timing in When You Speak, Not Just What You Say
The focus usually lies on the content of what is being discussed in the majority of workplace debates, but there is significance in the time at which an idea is introduced. A meeting progresses through stages that may not be explicitly defined, but there is always an introductory phase in which the purpose of the discussion is set; a middle phase in which opinions flow freely; and an ending phase in which decisions begin to form. At each stage of the process, the idea’s relevance shifts.

How Are Early and Late Inputs Interpreted?

In Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes (2018), studies focus on the role of sequence in perceptual processes within group dynamics. Earlier studies provide the perspective from which future contributions will be viewed. They lay out the language, themes, and framework that stay relevant throughout the discussion. Future studies are almost never judged independently. They are seen through the prism of prior contributions, either supporting them, seeming to contradict them, or simply fitting in without explicit acknowledgment. The words stay the same; the sequence does not.

Observing v/s Entering

It should also be noted that there are differences in approaches to participation. While some choose to first listen, giving space for discussion to happen before participating, others choose to speak sooner without being completely clear, but with the knowledge that simply speaking out contributes something. According to research in the journal “Journal of Applied Psychology” (2020), when it comes to meetings, people usually assume that if you are there, then you participate in some way.

How Does One Use Timing as an Unspoken Skill?

Patterns emerge as time goes on. The conversations themselves offer examples of points in which the openness of attention, the development of thought, or the narrowing of direction are evident. Timing moves from an accidental thing into something that is studied and then adapted. Sometimes the distinction between participation in and influence over conversation depends as much on timing as anything else.
