The Role of Shared Frustration in Team Bonding
Teams are usually depicted in terms of their alignment and results, but there is another form of relation that frequently emerges outside formal structures. It emerges in casual conversations that take place after an official meeting, in brief interactions that happen in the space between work-related activities, or in discussions that start without realizing that things are not going quite well as planned. These discussions exist outside the boundaries of formal teamwork, yet they bear an air of familiarity that distinguishes them from regular interactions.

Shared frustration finds its place somewhere on the spectrum of dynamics in the group since this experience might not necessarily lead to solving the problem at hand, and it may not be moving towards resolution at all. It is emphasized that the existence of mild negative emotions among the group members serves to align people socially since people become aware that other group members are experiencing the same challenges and uncertainties as they do, as seen in Social Psychological and Personality Science (2020). There is a definite change in the communication process within the group, furthermore. People tend to become less diplomatic in their communication and speak much more directly. Hierarchies seem to disappear or are less emphasized, and people start using less formal language to talk to each other. Slowly, such incidents start developing an internal frame of reference for the team. The anger may go away, but the memory stays on as a quiet way in which teams come to know each other without having to deal with perfect circumstances.
