The Rise of Working Multiple Identities, Not Just Jobs
Because the needs of the economy are changing constantly, different identities of work are being managed by individuals these days. You might be working full-time, but you might also have to be a freelancer or a content creator as a side hustle. This is because the nature of work has completely changed, according to a report by McKinsey Global Institute (2022). A large percentage of the workforce has started to take up a form of independent work alongside their 9-5, and the primitive way of having a singular identity of work is starting to become less and less relevant.

What is interesting to notice is that these roles do not have to be necessarily related. A person’s primary role could be very different from their secondary roles, and they start developing different identities that do not necessarily overlap. You are able to explore their different interests and skill sets, but on the other hand, you are constantly needed to switch between different modes of thinking.

Managing different work identities can lead to an engagement that has increased as well as mental strain, as per a study published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior (2021). You no longer limit your job title or their organizational roles; it now includes your individual platforms and your ability to describe what you do. You could have a flexible identity, but cannot define who you are because the lines between your different roles are blurred, and the question of what you do is not simple anymore.

A move towards having multiple identities is a way of adjusting to the uncertainties of the modern economy. Individuals are spreading their skills across different spaces rather than relying on a single identity. It is a shift in the approach to stability, which is achieved through a combination of identities that provide a sense of continuity. The structure of work is no longer singular; instead, it is layered by a combination of necessity and opportunity.
