New York Hotel Fire: Six people were killed and several others were displaced after a fire broke out at a hotel in New York on Monday (June 22, 2026). Following the fatal incident, a man was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges. The suspect, identified as Tyler J. Russell, 24, was arrested and charged with six counts of second-degree manslaughter, a Class C felony, and one count of fourth-degree arson, a Class E felony, according to a New York State Police (NYSP) press release. However, the reason behind his arrest remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

The fire broke out at approximately 6:01 a.m. local time at the Knights Inn motel on East Main Street in Endwell, N.Y., on Monday, the press release stated. Numerous residents displaced by the fire are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, police said. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church, where many of those affected have taken refuge. The identities of the deceased have not been publicly released.

“Shortly after 6 a.m., Members of the Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly,” the release said.

Multiple fire departments, ambulance crews, and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, and the Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team are on scene. The Red Cross is accepting donations of clothing and hygiene products, no food will be accepted at the Vestal United Methodist Church located at 328 Main Street.
