Nelson Mandela was one of the most influential leaders in modern history and a global symbol of the struggle for freedom and equality. Born Rolihlahla Mandela on July 18, 1918, in the village of Mvezo, he belonged to the Madiba clan of the Thembu people. His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, served as a counsellor to the acting king of the Thembu nation.

Mandela spent part of his childhood in Qunu, where he attended primary school. It was there that a teacher gave him the English name “Nelson,” following the custom of assigning Christian names to schoolchildren at the time. After completing his early education, he studied at the University College of Fort Hare, though he was later expelled for participating in a student protest.
In 1941, Mandela moved to Johannesburg, where he worked while continuing his studies and became increasingly involved in political activism. During this time, he met influential figures such as Walter Sisulu, who helped introduce him to networks that shaped his political journey.
Over the decades, Mandela became a central figure in the fight against apartheid, advocating for equality and justice in South Africa. His leadership and sacrifices made him a global icon of resilience and reconciliation.
Mandela died on December 5, 2013, but his legacy of courage, leadership, and hope continues to inspire people around the world.
