Stop hanging your kitchen towel on the oven handle — here's what to do instead
Damp kitchen towels harbor bacteria and pose fire hazards when left on counters or oven handles. A simple solution involves using adhesive hooks near the sink for proper drying and accessibility. This renter-friendly fix prevents towels from becom...

Your kitchen towel is dirtier than you realize
There’s one thing most people don’t talk about: damp, bunched-up kitchen towels are a great place for bacteria to live. According to a study presented at the American Society for Microbiology's annual meeting by researchers from the University of Mauritius, kitchen towels can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, like E. coli, especially if they’re kept damp, used for multiple purposes, or don’t get a chance to air out properly. The oven handle seems like a good idea, but a towel hanging over it can actually pose a serious fire hazard. The fridge handle is not much better, as it tends to slip off whenever someone grabs a snack.
The fix, it turns out, is almost embarrassingly simple.
Give your towel a proper home
The idea, which has been circulating on home organization content, is simple: use an adhesive hook, best placed near your kitchen sink, to give your towel a proper, permanent hanging spot: no drilling, no nails, no negotiating with landlords.
Command’s Large Double Hooks are often used for this. They hold up to four pounds, more than enough for a couple of damp kitchen towels, and they come off cleanly when you want to move them. If you go through towels fast or have a household that cooks a lot, the X-Large Triple Hooks are worth the small upgrade.
It’s all about placement. Before you start sticking things to your wall, stand at your sink and actually practice reaching for a towel. You want it close enough to grab in one motion, but not so close that it gets splashed every time you run the water. The sweet spot is usually the side of a cabinet just left or right of the sink.

The install takes less time than doing the dishes
Once you have your spot, the setup is minimal. Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol, press the adhesive strip down, attach the hook, and wait an hour before putting anything on it. That’s it.
This is especially worth noting if you are renting out. Command hooks are about as renter-friendly as it gets. They come off without paint chipping and can be moved around as many times as needed without leaving a mark.
Make it look intentional
One small detail that makes a bigger difference than you'd expect: match the hook finish to your existing hardware. Brass hooks are wonderful for kitchens with warmer tones, matte black is a good fit for modern or industrial settings, and brushed nickel works nearly anywhere. It's a small detail, but a coordinated hook is a design decision rather than just a fix.
The bottom line
It's a small thing, but then most kitchen improvements are. A home for your kitchen towel means it dries properly between uses, stays off the floor, and avoids becoming a hygiene hazard. A strategically placed adhesive hook is one of those low-effort, high-reward tweaks that really earns its keep for both renters and owners.
