Budget carrier Spirit Airlines has announced it is shutting down operations with immediate effect, cancelling all flights and asking passengers not to head to the airport. In a statement released early Saturday, May 2, the Florida-based airline said it had started an “orderly wind-down” of its business after years of financial struggles, abruptly ending its 34-year run in the ultra-low-cost travel market.

“[A]ll flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come,” the airline said in a statement.

Why is Spirit Airlines shutting down?

The airline had been facing mounting financial pressure for months. And the war in Iran pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher, worsening the company’s already fragile financial position. Spirit Aviation Holdings said it had made “extensive and comprehensive efforts” to restructure the business and improve its financial position, including a March 2026 agreement with bondholders to continue operations.

But the company said the recent sharp rise in oil prices badly hurt its financial outlook. “Unfortunately, despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook,” Spirit said.

It added, “With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down.” CEO Dave Davis said the airline needed “hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity” to survive, but could not secure that funding.

“However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company,” Davis said.

Spirit Airlines flights cancelled: What customers need to do

The airline urged travelers, "Spirit Guests should not go to the airport.” Since all flights have been cancelled, passengers are being asked to make alternative travel arrangements with other airlines on their own, as Spirit said it cannot help rebook tickets.

Will passengers get refunds?

Spirit said refunds for flights purchased directly using a credit or debit card will be processed automatically to the original form of payment. Passengers who booked through a travel agent must contact the agent directly to request a refund.

For customers who used vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points, compensation will be decided later through the bankruptcy court process.

Will Spirit pay for hotel stays or replacement flights?

The airline said it will not reimburse passengers for extra travel costs such as emergency hotel stays, replacement flights, or other incidental expenses caused by cancellations.

Passengers with travel insurance have been advised to check with their insurance provider to see if such expenses are covered.

What if you are already at the airport?

Spirit said passengers who have already arrived at the airport should immediately look for flights with another airline, as the company is unable to provide further service. “We apologize for the inconvenience,” the airline said.
